Mid Sussex District Council (MSDC) is looking for youngsters who go the extra mile to help others, improve the area or do something positive for the community.

The council is urging the people of Mid Sussex to nominate if they know someone who is ticking all of these boxes and deserves some recognition. Regina Choudhury, community development officer for MSDC, said: “Young people make a huge contribution to the Mid Sussex community and these awards are our chance to thank them for everything they do.

“Please think about any young person you know who has done something positive in your community.

“Maybe they’ve done some voluntary work to improve the area or given up their time to help look after others. Whatever it is, we’d like to hear from you.”

The Young Volunteer of the Year Awards, held annually, are for youngsters aged 14 to 21 and successful applicants must have completed at least ten hours of volunteering over the past year.

The council awards are divided into three categories: Young Community Volunteer, Young Leader and Young Achiever.

The Young Community Volunteer award will go to someone who has made a difference in their local community.

The Young Leader award will go to someone who has demonstrated their leadership in a project or organisation.

The Young Achiever will go to someone who has overcome significant obstacles and has made a positive difference to their own life or to other young people through education, campaigning or helping another overcome a difficult situation or personal problem.

All shortlisted youngsters will receive a certificate from the council and will be invited to the award ceremony on Tuesday June 6 at Borde Hill Gardens in Haywards Heath, where the award winners will be announced.
