DAVID WOODS: Enjoy the Halloween fun with a seasonal cocktail

Whether you love it or hate it, Halloween is upon us. While the children are getting excited about ‘trick or treat’, David Woods, executive head chef of the Sofitel Hotel, based at Gatwick’s north terminal, says adults can enjoy the fun with a seasonal cocktail or two.

I think the best part about Halloween is having the excuse to serve up fragrant soups and spicy dishes to take the chill off this annual ‘spooktacular’.

I see it as a practice run for bonfire night celebrations, so I enjoy scouring my recipes for the perfect dish to warm those coming in from the cold.

This year, kick start your Halloween party with this fiery cocktail using fresh ginger, magicked up by our mixologists.

A little of the root, peeled and chopped, will add a zing to carrot soup or pumpkin pie. It keeps for ages in the fridge, so is a great wintry staple for spicing up stir fries, curries and marinades.

For a milder flavour, add fresh ginger at the start of cooking.

The addition of ginger to this cocktail will give an inner glow to any adult about to accompany a child trick or treating.

The gnarled root of ginger even looks like an ingredient for a witch’s brew.

But it has good powers – it has numerous health benefits and in particular is known for warding off colds.

So, you have the perfect excuse to ask for a top up before you head outside with your little devils for the annual trick or treat around the neighbourhood.

Sofitel London Gatwick will be serving a range of Halloween cocktails this October.
