LETTER: £1.2 million for charity's work
Since April this year Oxfam shops in Surrey and West Sussex managed to raise over £1.2 million to support the charity's work around the world.
This is an incredible achievement that could have not happened without our staff, volunteers and supporters across both counties who have supported us so generously at a challenging time on the High Street.
The money raised will go towards Oxfam’s life saving projects. We are living in a time when more people – almost 60 million - are displaced from their homes than at any time since the Second World War. Whether responding to emergencies like the recent hurricane in Haiti, supporting Syrian families with clean water, or help women prevent violence, the charity relies on funds raised in its shops to support its vital humanitarian work.
Oxfam is helping hundreds of thousands of people who have had to flee their homes due to conflict. For example, in Syria, Jordan and Lebanon we are providing life-saving clean water, sanitation, shelter and food for families who have lost everything. The need is enormous and I feel so proud knowing that our shops are raising funds to help make the difference in the lives of so many people.
In the run up to Christmas, we really need more volunteers. People can have fun, learn new skills and help raise money that directly supports people living in poverty around the world. If people would like to get involved, they can go into their local Oxfam shop for more details.
