Cross Africa Equatorial Challenge for Ardingly College

More than half of Kenyans live in poverty. 59% of Kenyan children are malnourished; less than 30% of Kenyans living in rural areas have access to a toilet and only half of the rural population have access to clean water. Our desire is simple: to help and make a difference.

In 2008 Ardingly College raised £82,000 to BUILD a new school in Kenya; Ndogo Primary School. Since then a team of students have returned every year.

This summer, we will travel to Ndogo to teach, build and maintain the school as well as work in the surrounding villages.

We want to make a difference in and around Ndogo. We do this by showing compassion and love to those we meet but also by giving our time and expertise to improve the fabric of the facilities at the school and nearby centre for street children. Amongst other things we plan to build a playground this year for rescued street children to enjoy. To do this, You can help.

To raise the money needed to do this work in Kenya the team have set themselves a huge two part physical challenge – to travel along the equator, crossing from Africa’s west coast on the Southern Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean, and all in 48 hours!

March 22nd 2014: The group plan to cycle from Libreville, the capital city of Gabon, on the Southern Atlantic coast to Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. This will involve covering 2575km on five turbo trainers in 24 hours.

May 23rd 2014: Having ‘arrived’ at Kampala, the team have the task of crossing Lake Victoria. This will see us SWIMMING from Kampala to Kisumu, Kenya, covering 260km (10400 lengths of Ardingly’s swimming pool).

Next we will runthe 270km from Kisumu to Nairobi (across open West Sussex farmland) before hopping on bikes again to CYCLE 645km (through undulating West Sussex countryside) to Kismayo in Somalia on the Indian Ocean coast. Once again we have 24hours.

3220km cycling - 270km running - 260km swimming – in only 48 hours
