People power won the day as county withdrew plan to cut back on gritting roads

The article concerning the decision by West Sussex County Council to cut back on the gritting of certain roads, withdrawn later due apparently to public protest – backed by the Middy – is surely a prime example of the reaction and power of people willing to challenge a policy perceived as endangering their safety.

The prospect of anyone finding themselves placed potentially in the firing line, so to speak, concentrates the mind wonderfully as this case clearly demonstrates.

If this level of concern and reaction by the public were brought to the attention of the authorities on other equally crucial safety issues remedial measures could well be implemented. Salus populi suprema lex esto.
