The aim is to bring people of all ages together to celebrate Childhood Day, and everything that’s great about being a kid.

One way people can do this is by signing up to the Mid Sussex Marathon Virtual Fun Run and walking, jogging or even skipping the Virtual Mid Sussex Mile (1.6km) or Fun Run (1k).

A spokesman for the NSPCC said: “You can get friends and family involved over Zoom or take on a solo challenge, either on Friday, June 26 or a date that suits you.

“Collect donations or get sponsored for your activity, and every pound will help the NSPCC be here for children.

“Childhood Day is not limited to runs however.

Participants can take inspiration from childhood games, get everyone involved and have some fun whilst raising money and awareness to help give more children the safe and happy childhood they deserve.

“Other ideas include tackling a mile-long egg and spoon race, building an obstacle course out of household items, bouncing 1km on a space hopper, hosting a mini sports day in your back garden or local park, taking part in fancy dress or getting your face painted.

“You can let your imagination run wild and come up with your own childhood-inspired fundraising challenges too.

“The coronavirus crisis is making life hard for children – and many are contacting Childline for help.

“There has been a surge in calls to Childline from children worried about coronavirus.

“Many are struggling with their mental health, or don’t feel safe in their own homes. Your support can help the NSPCC be here when they need someone to turn to.”

Children and families completing the challenge can submit photos and evidence of participation by Wednesday, July 1, and every child taking part will receive a wooden medal.

Kate Hershkowitz, NSPCC community fundraising manager for Sussex, said: “We are hugely grateful to the Mid Sussex Marathon for supporting Childhood Day.

“There are lots more ideas on how to get involved and suggestions for fun events on our website www.nspcc.org.uk/childhoodday.

“Funds raised by Childhood Day could not come at a better time because we are growing increasingly concerned about the number of children who will experience abuse or neglect due to the impact of Coronavirus, with families struggling with lockdown, job losses and school closures.
