Burgess Hill mum goes ‘above and beyond’ during Waitrose shift

A Waitrose employee has been praised for going ‘above and beyond’ for a pensioner during lockdown.

Melissa Harris, 39, has been working at Waitrose in Burgess Hill for three years after giving birth to her first child, and went back this year after giving birth to her second child who was three months premature.

She received a call from an 80-year-old woman who wanted some shopping delivered, but was not able to place an order online.

Dave Butler, Melissa’s husband, said: “Mel used to work as a veterinary nurse and she quite enjoys being around people, and usually works on her own.

“A woman phoned saying she wasn’t computer literate, and offered to pay the driver if some shopping could be delivered.

“She said she hasn’t been outside since the start of the year because she’s worried about getting sick, and her friends and family have been helping but she feels bad relying on other people and wants to be more independent.

“Mel’s heart melted a bit, and got it for her and dropped it round, and the lady was so lovely and appreciative.

“Mel phoned her back saying if she needs anything else to let her know – it was so sweet.”

“While Mel was getting the shopping her manager noticed, who gave her a bottle of wine, and congratulated her in their internal newsletter.”
