Business bakes in aid of hospice

Burgess Hill Business Park is known for its diverse range of products and services on home ground as well as exported globally, but what it is not known for is baking.

But in light of a baking challenge before Christmas, that might be about to change.

King’s Centre in Burgess Hill hosted the BHBP Awesome Autumn Battle of the Bakes to support St Peter and St James Hospice. More than 30 entries came from enthusiasts and first-time bakers.

Judges said: “The standard was unbelievably high, with delicious flavours, textures and awesome autumn decoration. The event raised £310 for its chosen charity, and it’s clear to see that baking is definitely on the agenda for business in Burgess Hill!”

The competition included two individual categories and a company-orientated category for a Corporate Showstopper Cake that reflected the business, its products or people.

It was judged by two representatives from Burgess Hill based Lizzie’s Food Factory, senior cake decorator, Shakira Tettersell and sales manager, Kevin Chaplin.

Winners included Nettie Hickling from Bio-Productions with her fox, owl and bonfire night cup cakes. Judges commented on the ‘great chocolate flavour, moist texture with good decoration’.

Martyn Blundell of Ridgeview’s decorative butterscotch and apple cake was said to have ‘fantastic flavour, unusual but worked well, was very moist and had great decoration’.

There were three joint winners for the Corporate Showstopper: the PVL Van Cake, Clifford Dann’s Pumpkin House and Bio Productions’ Urinal Cake.
