It is part of its‘Be a Hero’ campaign,

As a way of keeping up that competitive spirit and to help feel connected during the lock-down, the idea is to challenge teams or whole clubs to see how many goals they can score over one hour. They all take part at the same time, sharing their achievements over video calls and social media and helping Rockinghorse in the process.

The idea initially came from a hugely successful netball challenge in which two Sussex based netball clubs challenged their members to join forces for a shoot-a-thon. Their aim was to score as many goals as possible in one hour and with 45 girls taking part, they managed a total of over 26,000 goals, raising more than £3,500 through sponsorship for the children’s charity.

Following this amazing achievement, Rockinghorse thought that it would be a great idea to promote the idea to local sports clubs and schools throughout the county who are currently unable to train or take part in their usual matches.

Whatever the sport and whatever equipment you may have at home, there’s lots of ways for keen sports teams to get involved.

Footballers could see how many goals they can score against a sibling or parent in one hour. For netball or basketball fans, the number of hoops scored in an hour is an easy challenge. And if golf’s your game, perhaps you could set up a cup and see how many ‘hole in ones’ you can score.

Even if you don’t have all the right equipment, you can create a challenge using household items like throwing a ball into a bucket or hitting a chalk-drawn target on the ground or a wall. Then all you have to do is set the date and time and get sponsored by your friends and family for a one-off donation or for each goal you score within the hour.

Hollie Trezise, schools and community fundraising manager at Rockinghorse, said:“We are all too aware at the moment that lots of younger people are missing their regular sports training, not to mention spending time with their friends.

"Our ‘Go for Goals’ challenge is a great way for teams to connect with each other using video calls, take part in their challenges at the same time and spur each other on. This way it can feel like a group exercise in the safety of your own home. Seeing the success of the netball shoot-a-thon and how easy it was to set up, we’re really hoping that other groups will be up for the challenge.”

All the money raised from these challenges will go directly towards the ‘Be a Rockinghorse Hero’ campaign to support NHS Children’s services Brighton and across Sussex in direct response to the COVID-19 crisis.
