The Fox Hill Association Committee planted the tree in Fox Hill village as a tribute to the work of residents in safeguarding the local environment of the Fox Hill area since 1975, and the plaque is to thank committee members for their work in protecting the area.

Stephanie Went, who is on the committee, said: “The founding of the association in 1975 was in direct response to the proposal for a new cattle market on the land behind the Fox & Hounds public house and the campaign to prevent this development was successful.

“Other successes of the association included the defeat of the proposal for an industrial waste incinerator to be located within the grounds of the Princess Royal Hospital.

“The association has contributed to a number of planning inquiries over the years and secured a ‘townscape protection’ designation for the area from a Department of the Environment Planning Inspector in the 1990s recognising the distinctive architecture and layout of the area.”

Stephanie added: “The association has set up a Neighbourhood Watch system for the Fox Hill area, which keeps residents in touch with community issues.

“At times like these the values of community collaboration are more important than ever.”
