Ian Meadows said: “I’m just going to have to be patient to get rid of my rubbish.

“Life isn’t going to get back to normal for a long time and things like this are going to happen all the time.”

Amanda Francis added: “I went there this morning as our alley was not passable due to the amount of cardboard we have collected since lockdown.

“I got there for 8.30am and the queue was at the traffic lights.

“By time I had been through the tip, about 9.25am the road and roundabout was completely blocked.”

Some readers suggested West Sussex County Council should offer bookable time slots online in a bid to combat the gridlock.

As of today, restrictions on which items can be disposed of at tips in West Sussex have been loosened.

Residents can now get rid of the following items:

• garden waste

• general household waste

• wood

• cardboard

• electrical items

• bulky items

• white goods

• furniture.

But soil, hardcore, plasterboard, asbestos, tyres and textiles/clothes will not be allowed at this time.

This is to ensure social distancing measures can be maintained and to limit queues.

West Sussex County Council has been approached for comment.
