The new festival replaces the annual open garden event this year, which was cancelled because of Covid-19.

Katie Derham, hospice patron and spokesman for the event said: “I was saddened that the annual event had to be cancelled but delighted that the village’s front gardens can be admired this year and will raise funds for the charity.

“Competition will be great though as Lindfield’s gardens are distractingly beautiful.”

Amanda Hyatt, head of fundraising at the hospice, said: “It was incredibly disappointing not the have the open gardens event this year so we are excited that Lindfield gardeners are still on board to show off their talents and help support the hospice in this innovative way.”

A team of volunteers will view participating gardens in early July and on Saturday, July 11 will announce the select few from different parts of the village that will go through to the next round.

The organisers will publish details of the gardens selected, together with a map, and encourage the community to walk the trail to view the gardens from a safe distance and vote for the people’s choice.

The most popular garden in each part of the village and the overall People’s Choice will be announced on Saturday, September 12, the final day of the festival.

Winners will receive prizes donated by sponsors.

More than 40 gardens are taking part so far, ranging from cottage gardens on the High Street to gardens tucked away in nooks and cul-de-sacs, and suburban front gardens around the village - some with eclectic collections of ornaments and pot displays.

You can vote for your favourite front garden – all votes will be entered for a prize draw.

Both the most popular garden and the first name drawn from votes submitted will win a pot donated by Pots and Pithoi.
