Christine Colbourne, a member of u3a Latin Group in Haywards Heath who lives in Lindfield, stumbled across the graffiti while out for a walk in the village with her husband on Tuesday, August 4.

“The first one is on a wall in River Lane,” she said.

“It says Monksy hic erat’ which means ‘Monksy woz here’!

“The second is on a litter bin near Ye Olde Smugglers Inne and reads ‘Non Lectica’.

“Lectica means (a) litter or sedan chair so the message means not (a) litter.”

So who is the mysterious Monksy? And how has he come to writing these Latin messages in Alfriston?
