Proposals to build 165 new homes on land at Hassocks Golf Club have been given the go-ahead by Mid Sussex District Council.
Developers Bellway say that the development will bring an investment of nearly £2 million to the area.
The 9.65 hectare site - 44 per cent of which is to remain as open space - will include 50 affordable homes for local people, say Bellway.
The housebuilders say that they are to make £1.8 million in financial contributions to local schools and community facilities as part of the planning agreement.
Said a spokesman: “These will include £616,000 to local primary education, £663,000 for secondary education, £192,000 towards pitch improvements and ancillary facilities at London Road recreation ground and £110,000 towards the development of the pavilion for community use, as well as £101,000 towards healthcare.”
Further contributions are set to be made towards police and library services and public rights of way improvements, say Bellway. It also plans to pprovide a play area at the development which will be open to the public and an off-site footpath connection to the recreation ground to the south of the site.
Bellway head of sales Daniel Williamson said: “We’re now looking forward to starting work on the development and providing well-built local homes for local people.
“We’re happy to contribute to local schools, community facilities and the NHS, because we want to be a developer who makes a difference to local communities, not just one who builds houses.
“The new homes will provide a range of housing for local people, including first-time buyers, families and downsizers and we’re expecting considerable interest in the scheme.”
The new development will occupy the south-eastern part of the golf club, with part of the reconfigured golf course to the west.
A new club house with associated car parking will be sited to the west of Friars Oak House.
