The six charity volunteers organise fundraising activities every year including the Peter James Golf Classic and have clocked up more than 115 years support between them.

But they are not resting on their laurels and want to attract new recruits to help with events they have planned for the future.

Money raised by the committee members helps fund vital medical research into conditions affecting babies and children.

The annual Peter James Golf Classic is supported by the Sussex-based crime novelist and raised £11,000 last year. This year’s event is at Haywards Heath Golf Club on September 11 and the committee is currently looking for sponsorship and raffle prizes for the day.

Other events in the pipeline include a lunch and a flower arranging demonstration.

Longest serving member Hazel Gubbin has been raising money for 37 years, while Hedvig Bodley has clocked up 32 years.

Sarah Baldock, a past committee chair, has been involved for 26 years and current committee chair Jill Thomas has 13 years under her belt.

Janet Pickett and Paula Richardson are relative newcomers having served five and two years respectively with the committee.

Jill said: “We’re a jolly committee and we have fun but we always need more people to muck in. We’re especially keen to recruit some younger members to complement our maturity!”

Community Fundraising Manager for the South East Sarah Stevenson said: “We’re very proud to present the committee with their awards in recognition of their exceptional commitment and dedication over so many years.

“It is thanks to the extraordinary hard work of volunteers like them that the charity has been able to establish such a long and distinguished track record of funding life-changing research to help babies and children.”
