The Sayers Common Commmunity Shop - owned and run by the community - is making sure it provides villagers with vital goods and food.

A list of vulnerable people and those self-isolating has been compiled and the shop is now also obtaining and delivering prescription items, as well as taking telephone orders for goods over the phone before delivering them to those who cannot get out.

Shop manager Jane Cheshire is using local suppliers to keep the shop stocked with fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy products, groceries, meat, frozen food and bakery items.

The shop is open on reduced hours - from 9am - 3pm - because of staff and volunteer self isolation during the crisis.

But one grateful shopper said: “Jane keeps the doors open with an iron resolve to continue to support the community.”

She added: “I do believe Jane and the shop deserve recognition. Jane is doing a brilliant job holding the fort, as most of the other staff are off on self isolation.”

A message from the Editor, Gary Shipton:

In order for us to continue to provide high quality and trusted local news, I am asking you to please purchase a copy of our newspapers.

With the coronavirus lockdown having a major impact on many of our local valued advertisers - and consequently the advertising that we receive - we are more reliant than ever on you helping us to provide you with news and information by buying a copy of our newspapers.

Our journalists are highly trained and our content is independently regulated by IPSO to some of the most rigorous standards in the world. But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis.

Stay safe, and best wishes.
