As the end of spring approaches, gardeners at Borde Hill Garden are still hard at work maintaining the grounds.

They are continuing to follow government guidance and the garden remains closed until further notice, although they remain hopeful that they will be able to open soon to enjoy the summer.

The garden’s team is continuing its work while social distancing to ensure the garden will look at its best for when it reopens.

Andy Stevens, head gardener, said: “The garden team have been busy adding willow supports to perennials in our herbaceous borders, weeding around the garden to catch weeds as they sprout up and doing extra watering due to the particularly dry weather we’ve experienced during April.

“We have also been pruning shrubs and dead-heading bulbs which have finished flowering, getting ready for the new colour that May will bring.”

A spokesman for the garden said: “For 2020 we have collaborated with leading garden designer Chris Beardshaw to introduce new planting designs in Paradise Walk and the Italian Garden.

“The garden team have been busy planting the new perennials to extend colour for summer and through into autumn, and we look forward to sharing the new designs with you when the garden re-opens.

“At present, the frittalerias have finished flowering and alliums have started to bloom in the Italian Garden, while the summer magnolias continue to flower in the Garden of Allah.

“Rhododendrons, azaleas and many flowering trees including cornus, davidias and malus are starting to take centre stage around the garden.

“We continue to share images and videos of this beautiful colour across our social media channels, and would be delighted to hear comments of what is currently on show in your own garden via our Instagram page.
