‘Tommy statue’ installed in Haywards Heath to remember war heroes
A figure to remember fallen soldiers has been installed in Haywards Heath ahead of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day).
Barratt Homes has partnered with the Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) to install one of the RBLI’s iconic Tommy Club figures at Wychwood Park in Haywards Heath.
The full-size silhouette of ‘Tommy’ – the term used for a common soldier in the British Army – complete with a helmet and bayonet, was installed just before VE Day on Saturday, May 8.
The figure, which will commemorate the lives of soldiers who fought in the First World War and thank the veterans of today, has also been installed by the housebuilder at Chalkers Rise in Peacehaven.
Lynnette St-Quintin, sales and marketing director for Barratt Southern Counties, said: “We are proud to give our very own ‘Tommy’ figures a home at Chalkers Rise and Wychwood Park, and are pleased to do our part to show our gratitude to Armed Forces veterans, many of whom live locally to our developments.
“We are always working to support active and former Service personnel, and hope that Tommy will help our residents and the local community to take a moment to commemorate those who served in the World Wars.”
Barratt Homes is the Tommy Club’s first corporate patron, supporting the charity with a donation of £100,000, and agreeing to purchase the figures for its developments across the South East.
The funds raised have been used to provide jobs, homes, and mental health support for veterans across the UK.
Barratt Southern Counties is currently building a range of four and five-bedroom homes at Wychwood Park in Haywards Heath, with prices starting from 494,995 for a four-bedroom home.
