Wivelsfield-based charity welcomes Downton Abbey actor as patron

Peter, who is best known for his role as Hugh ‘Shrimpie’ MacClare, Marquess of Flintshire, in Downton Abbey, has been a committed and outspoken advocate for animals around the world.

He joins other high-profile supporters, such as Princess Alexandra, the Earl of Stockton, Ann Widdecombe and Julie Burchill in supporting the charity.

Andy Foxcroft, chair of trustees, said: “For a respected campaigner like Peter to agree to become a patron of our charity is tremendous news.

“Over the years, our work in Israel and the West Bank has saved thousands of donkeys from pain, neglect and misery and for that to be recognised by one of the UK’s most respected voices for animals is truly humbling.

“We look forward to working with Peter and on behalf of our staff, trustees and supporters welcome him on board.”

Safe Haven for Donkey’s was set up in 2000 to help the thousands of working donkeys in Israel and the Palestinian territories.

Today, its sanctuary in Israel is providing life-long care to around 200 unwanted and abused donkeys of all ages, and its mobile clinic helps around 500 working donkeys, mules and horses across the Palestinian territories every month.

Common injuries such as those from poor harnessing, overgrown hooves and bad teeth are easily treatable.

Peter said: “I have become more and more aware of the often appalling conditions in which donkeys suffer around the world.

“These beautiful animals are all too often overlooked and I am delighted to become a patron for Safe Haven - a charity that does so much to relieve the suffering of these wonderful creatures.
