Finding children a permanent family is being highlighted by West Sussex County Council ahead of National Adoption Week.
The authority is using the national event, which starts on Monday October 19 and is coordinated by information service First4Adoption, to seek adopters for groups of children who currently waiting the longest to find a permanent home, such as young siblings.
An information evening is being held at Billingshurst Conference and Community Centre on Wednesday October 21 from 6.00pm-9.00pm to help prospective parents find out more.
There will be a short presentation from 6.30pm, after which parents of adopted children and members of the council’s adoption team will be on hand to share their experiences and answer any questions.
Jacky, who along with her husband has adopted siblings, said: “We have two lovely children who are full siblings, they moved in with us two and a half years ago and we haven’t looked back.
“It has taken time for us all to settle as a family - particularly as our son has memories of what happened and our daughter has additional needs.
“During the adoption process we discussed everything about us currently and our childhoods.
“It can feel like you are being interviewed about your whole life, but it is so important that children in care are going to go to a suitable caring loving home. The process can feel overwhelming, but is worth it in the end.
“We love our kids very much, we have our hair-raising days, but we wouldn’t change a thing.”
Peter Evans, WSCC’s cabinet member for children – start of life, added: “Last year 45 children in West Sussex found a new family through adoption.
“National Adoption Week is an ideal time for us to speak to people who might be thinking about adoption to take that first step and find out more. We are particularly keen to hear from people who could consider adopting siblings, and in doing so help brothers and sisters stay together.
“We encourage prospective families from all walks of life to come forward. You can apply to adopt regardless of your marital status, sexuality, gender, cultural or ethnic background.”
