WADDESDON MANOR is the subject of lecture at the Newick & District Decorative and Fine Art Society meeting on Tuesday February 9 at 2.15pm. The lecturer is William Forrester an art historian who lectures in the London Galleries as well as giving TV and radio talks. In 1874 Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild bought a lovely tract of land in the vale of Aylesbury and wanted a country estate but not on traditional English lines, as he wanted a French Chateau. He employed a French architect, Gabrial-Hippolyte Destailleur to do just that. The house parties at Waddesdon were famous and guests included Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales. Guests enjoyed all the modern comforts of running water, central heating and electricity still very new inventions in those days. Visitors are most welcome and the cost is £7 on the door and as always there will be a chance to talk to the speaker. If you require any further information please ring Marjorie Blunden on 01825 723250.

THANKS go to Dave Denny, the producer, and everyone who helped make Plumpton Pantomime Society’s production of Cinderella such a success. There is not room here to mention everyone involved as there was a huge cast and backstage crew, more than seventy members of the Society are mentioned in the programme and that doesn’t include all those who helped with front of house, bar and refreshments. A huge credit has to go to the writer John Fahey for an excellent script. The innuendos and comedic reference to people and societies in the village flowed throughout. It seems wrong to mention a few of the cast, but if I don’t that too seems wrong. David Rankin and Paul Kluge were a wonderful double act, as the ugly sisters Nausea and Septica. All the principal roles excelled Emma Symes as the fairy godmother, Annabel Saunders as Cinderella, Nancy Doyle as Dame Hardup, Peter Jones as Baron Hardup, Olivia Maheux as Prince Charming and Hannah Collins as Dandini. I make no apologies, as usual, for giving a special mention to Duncan Taylor-Jones, the director, whose energy and enthusiasm throughout as the character Buttons was infectious. Duncan’s ability to engage with all ages and his adlibbing was actively encouraged and enjoyed by a most appreciative audience. Thanks to you all for a very happy and memorable evening.
