The retailer already has a store in the town, but since the Martlets Shopping Centre is due to be redeveloped, it has been forced to find a new home.

A planning application for a new supermarket on the redundant gas holder site off Leylands Road is due to be heard by Mid Sussex Disrict Council’s District Planning Committee next Thursday June 16.

Planning officers are recommending the plans be approved despite 68 letters of objection compare to five letters of support.

According to the objectors Leylands Road is already busy and a new supermarket will cause ‘severe’ congestion, the site should be used for housing instead, car parking should be insufficient, with other suggesting it should be located in the town centre, or in an out-of-town location.

Another objector demanded a public inquiry be held before the application is considered.

The officers’ report states that there has been no interest in developing the site for housing, West Sussex County Council has raised no highways objections, and the scheme had significant environmental benefits.
