According to a report published last year by the Children’s Commissioner for England, there has been a rise in children gambling, through in-game purchases which is often causing a sharp decrease in mental health in young people.

The Government is due to publish its review of the 2005 Gambling Act in the near future, as part of the 2019 Conservative Party Manifesto commitment to review the Gambling Act.

Ms Davies said: “As a former minister for sport and civil society, including gambling, I welcome the Government’s intention to review the Gambling Act 2005, since I believe there is a need to continue to address the challenge of problem gambling.

“We have faced new challenges impacting our mental wellbeing over the last decade and a half which may have been exacerbated by the impact of COVID-19 and the isolation associated with the pandemic.

“This examination of this Act is now more than ever important. I would urge people to get in touch with organisations such as Safer Gambling UK should they feel their gambling activities are becoming harmful to themselves or others, including impacting their mental wellbeing.”

Camilla Toogood, Government relations manager for the Betting and Gaming Council, said: “2020 has been a year of substantial change for the industry as it has adapted to cope with the realities of COVID-19.

“Not only have businesses adapted to ensure that premises are covid-safe, but also that safer gambling remains at the forefront of our activities.”
