West Sussex County Council’s draft Walking and Cycling Strategy sets out how it aims to promote and enable walking and cycling, and a public consultation on the document runs until Wednesday June 22.

The draft strategy’s aims include:

• Ensuring that cycling and walking are recognised as important travel modes and therefore part of the transport mix

• Reducing the number of cyclists and pedestrians killed or seriously injured each year

• Supporting economic development

• Reducing congestion by encouraging and enabling people to travel without a car

• Improving access to urban and rural areas

It also includes a list of more than 350 potential walking and cycling improvements suggested by stakeholders and community groups earlier this year, which will support future bids for funding and when housing development takes place.

John O’Brien, WSCC’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “This draft strategy sets out our vision for walking and cycling over the next ten years.

“It will help local interest and community groups to make suggestions for the development of cycling and walking improvements.”

He added: “We want to know what everyone thinks, so please take the opportunity to comment and respond.”

A paper copy of the draft strategy is available at every West Sussex library.
