Will Conservative Jeremy Quin succeed Francis Maude as Horsham MP?

A few people in the town may not have heard of him before but in several hours Jeremy Quin could be Horsham’s next MP.

A month after Francis Maude announced he was stepping down after 18 years as MP in February, the Horsham Conservative Association chose Mr Quin, a company adviser from Buckinghamshire, to contest the upcoming general election for the party in Horsham.

The Conservatives are runaway favourites to retain Horsham as Mr Maude received 52.7 per cent of the vote in 2010, more than 20 percentage points ahead of his closest challenger Lib Dem Godfrey Newman.

Last time around UKIP’s Harry Aldridge polled just 2,839 votes, or 5.2 per cent of the vote, but this time around Roger Arthur, a former Tory deputy leader at Horsham District Council until his defection to UKIP in early 2013, is expected to increase his party’s share of the vote substantially.

The six other candidates for Horsham are Labour’s Martyn Davis, Jim Duggan of the Peace Party, Darrin Green for the Greens, Lib Dem Morwen Millson, independent Jim Rae, and James Smith for the Something New Party.

They attended hustings events organised by the Campaign to Protect Rural England, the College of Richard Collyer, and West Sussex Humanists.
