Commuters faced delays of up to an hour after all lines between Haywards Heath and Lewes became blocked.

Southern Rail said icy third rails had led to ‘poor rail conditions’ with passengers warned services could be heavily delayed, altered or even cancelled.

Trains were also unable to stop at both Cooksbridge and Plumpton due to the issue.

Maria Caulfield, MP for Lewes, was one of many MPs across Sussex who met with Southern Rail bosses to discuss disruption on line last month.

She said: “Despite assurances at our recent meetings performance has been appalling and I have lost faith in the management of Southern Rail.”

All lines between the two stations were re-opened at around 10am but delays of up to 45 minutes continued for the following two hours.
