The internet is awash with claims that next week’s rare astronomical event will signal the start of the apocalypse but experts at NASA say our planet is safe.

The moon will be unusually close to the Earth and look bigger and brighter than usual - it will be a Supermoon and it will start to go into partial eclipse at 12,07am in the UK.

The lunar eclipse will become total from 1.11am until 2.23am and will end completely at 4.27am as the Earth finally crosses between the Sun and Moon.

Then, at about 4.30am, the Moon will be fully visible again and it should have a red glow from the Earth’s shadow.

It will be the first time in 30 years that there will be a Supermoon and a total lunar eclipse on the same night.

Some online conspiracy theorists claim passages in the Bible suggest the phenomenon will trigger the apocalypse.

However, a NASA spokesman said: There is no existing evidence that an asteroid or any other celestial object is on a trajectory that will impact Earth.
