Remembrance concert

BBC Young Musician of the Year 2010 Lara Melda performs with Worthing Symphony Orchestra in their Remembrance Sunday concert which includes two works from the Classic FM Hall of Fame top 20.

Lara makes her Worthing debut with Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor.

She was given the prestigious Young Musician accolade at the age of 16 for performing Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No.2 with Vasily Petrenko and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The performance was broadcast on BBC 2 and BBC Radio 3 and she was immediately invited to record the same work with the BBC Concert Orchestra for BBC Radio 2.

Lara is a pupil at the Purcell School and the Royal College of Music Junior Department and has performed extensively in concerts nationwide. She also performed in the Chopin Society’s Champagne and Chopin concert at the Arts Club, performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto in D minor with the Purcell Sinfonia in May 2008 and recently performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12 with the English Chamber Orchestra at Cadogan Hall.

During the 2011/12 season Lara will perform Mozart Concerto K466 with the Aurora Orchestra and Nicholas Collon at King’s Place in London and with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Grant Llewellyn in Cardiff. Lara Melda performs regularly in Turkey and made her debut at the International Music Festival in Istanbul in June 2011, playing the Grieg Concerto with the Borusan Philharmonic.

She has also appeared at the Kemal Center in Istanbul and recitals this season include the Antalya Piano Festival and Bogazici University.

Worthing’s Remembrance Sunday concert will include Brahms’s Symphony No.1 in C minor which presents a musical journey from darkness to light before concluding with an uplifting final melody in a major key. It will be performed alongside two famous marches from the Second World War, Alwyn’s Desert Victory and The True Glory as well as Ungar’s poignant Ashokan Farewell, a waltz in D major which was written in the style of a Scottish lament. 

The concert will be in the Assembly Hall, Worthing, on Sunday, November 13 at 2.45pm.
