Severe weather warning for Sussex

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning across the coast for later today (Saturday).

Forecasters say that though many places could stay dry, heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop during Saturday afternoon and last into the evening, with localised torrential downpours.

The yellow warning was issued at 1.30pm today for between 3pm and 10pm.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said, “The public should be aware of the risk of localised surface water flooding, as well as lightning strikes and large hail.

“Rising temperatures as sunny spells develop this afternoon are likely to set off some heavy and thundery showers this afternoon across parts of southern and central England and parts of east Wales.

“ Within these areas, the precise location of any showers is still very uncertain, and many places will miss them. However, where they do develop there is the possibility of around 20 mm in an hour which may cause some disruption.

“The thunderstorms will slowly clear away eastwards this evening.”
