Snow: big demand for rock salt

CUSTOMERS are inundating Mid Sussex garden centres for rock salt as staff prepare themselves for unprecedented levels of demand.

South Downs Nurseries at Hassocks has reported a brisk trade since the Arctic weather descended on the region.

“There was another lorry-load of rock salt waiting for us when we arrived this morning”, said director Brian Sayers, “which was just as well because we were about to run out.”

The lorry had made it through the snowy conditions to bring the salt from a Derbyshire quarry.

“The only problem is”, explained Mr Sayers, “every time we order a consignment, the price goes up.”

There has also been a healthy demand for snow shovels and plastic sledges.
