Snow: police advice to drivers

Motorists are being advised by police that if you are due to travel properly prepare for your journey. Remember to check local weather reports for the weather along your route before you leave.

If you must set out, carry blankets, food and a flask of hot drink in case you get stuck and have a shovel or spade to help with digging out your vehicle or clearing a path in snow or ice. Remember, conditions may worsen en route so be prepared

This advice follows an incident on the A23 from Patcham to Handcross after five lorries became jack-knifed due to the snow.
