Storm Bella causes travel disruption across Sussex

There are road closures and rail delays across Sussex this morning after Storm Bella hit last night.

Railway lines have been closed between Ashford and Hastings and Hastings and Eastbourne after two trees fell on the line, according to Southern Rail.

A spokesman said: “We are looking at alternative arrangements but advise not travelling at this time.”

The A24 in Horsham was closed in ‘numerous places’ this morning, due to significant standing water and debris on the road, according to police.

A spokesman said on Twitter: “If you have to go out, be careful and take your time.”

In East Sussex, the A21 was closed in both directions between the A28 Baldslow and the A2100 John’s Cross due to a fallen tree near Sedlescombe.

A fallen tree caused damage to at least one car in Worthing’s Westland Avenue.

The B2179 between Birdham and West Wittering is blocked due to a fallen tree near the Itchenor turn off.

In Eastbourne, the A259 East Dean Road Westbound is partly blocked near St Mary’s Church due to a fallen tree – a diversion is in place.

The Littlehampton Coastguard warned people heading out for a seafront walk today to take care.

A spokesman said: “The worst of the winds may have passed us now but there are still large waves hitting the beaches.

“If you are planning on a walk along the coast today make sure you stay away from the waves and take a phone.

“In a coastal emergency call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
