This year’s theme for the popular reading event, produced by The Reading Agency, in association with Guinness World Records, is ‘Record Breakers’.

The scheme will bring together the worlds of fact and fiction, challenging young readers to explore some of the real life achievements and world records featured in the Guinness World Records books.

Collecting stickers as they go, young readers aged between four and 11 years will discover weird, wonderful and wacky records from around the world in six different categories: cool tech, way to go, the big stuff, animal magic, human touch and action adventure.

The scheme is free and all children need to do is read six books by Saturday September 12.

Children will receive rewards for each book they read and those that complete at least six books will receive a medal and certificate.

David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for residents’ services, said: “The aim of the challenge is to encourage children to carry on reading during the school summer holidays.

“All our local libraries have a pack of fun materials to give to families, including a collector’s poster and stickers.

“I really hope we can have a record breaking number of children taking part this year!”
