Sussex parents concerned about '˜family time' in study
New research has shown that more than seven in ten parents in the South East feel the daily demands and distractions of modern life, making it hard for families to spend time together.
Figures by New Covent Garden Soup suggests the typical family unit are getting fewer than four quality hours together per week, with over half blaming work stress as the biggest barrier.
The study of 2,000 parents also found that sharing special moments with children is important to parents in the South East, with more than nine in ten parents saying they feel it is important to create good early memories for their children.
On the findings, clinical psychologist Dr Nihara Krause commented: “Spending shared quality time together as a family is extremely important - not only does it help to strengthen family bonds and connections and improve communication, but shared time also ensures children feel prioritised and cared for.”
In the South East, other research shows memories made at the beach are the fondest part of a family’s memories.
Dr Krause added: “Time spent in free play in the natural world has many benefits and an extremely positive impact on health - improving learning ability, creativity and mental, psychological and emotional wellbeing, as well as enhancing physical strength and fitness.
“Time spent together outdoors enjoying activities such as trips to the seaside, walking and visits to parks and wooded areas, provides the opportunity to reconnect as a family away from distractions and gadgets. Exploring nature, such as gathering shells on the beach, not only provides new learning but also encourages curiosity and opportunities for free, unstructured play.”
