Top Gear’s new presenter actor Matt LeBlanc performed smoking wheelspins in a Ford Mustang beside Britain’s main war memorial as a police escort looked on.

Army chiefs later complained that the the stunt had been carried out beside a “sacred tribute to millions of peiple who have done far more for their country than Chris Evans or Matt LeBlanc ever will.”

Top Gear presenter Chris Evans, who took over the show after Jeremy Clarkson was sacked for hitting a producer, apologised ‘unreservedly’ during his radio breakfast show on Monday morning.

And the apology led to Sir Nicholas taking to Twitter to vent his fury. He tweeted: “So I should bloody well hope. #ignorant brutes”

Sir Nicholas, grandson of war-time Prime Minister Winston Churchill, is a former defence minister.

Meanwhile, questions have been raised about London road closures agreed by Westminster Council and why Scotland Yard sent a police motorcycle escort to accompany Matt LeBlanc’s Mustang.
