Gas distribution company SGN started replacing its gas mains along the A23 Crawley Avenue on August 19.

The works were being carried out mainly on grass verges and footpaths along its northbound carriageway.

Spokesman Katie Lobban said: “In order to carry out an emergency repair to a section of the gas main close to the road, we had to reduce Ifield Roundabout down to one lane on Tuesday.

“All being well, this work is set to be complete by the middle of next week. All lanes will be fully reopened at that point and we will continue our project in the footpaths and verges alongside the road.”

She added: “We are working to replace our gas mains alongside the A23 Crawley Avenue. This essential project involves the replacement of old, metal gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply for the local community. Our work has been carefully planned in close consultation with the local authority.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused and would like to thank road users for their patience. We will be doing everything we can to complete our essential works as quickly as possible.”
