A blue Mazda 6 saloon travelling south was in collision with the silver Jaguar X-type saloon travelling north. The impact broke the Mazda in two.

Its driver, a 24-year-old woman from Seaford, suffered a broken neck, with fractures to three vertebrae but no damage to her spinal cord. She also sustained multiple cuts. Her passenger, a 34-year-old man, was knocked unconscious and suffered suspected abdominal injuries.

The road was closed for several hours while emergency services were at the scene. All four casualties were taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, and detained for treatment.

Sergeant Mark Baker, of Sussex Police, said: “We are investigating the circumstances of the collision and appealing for witnesses, either to the collision itself or to sightings of either vehicle prior to the collision. We would also like to thank other motorists for their patience while the road was closed.”
