Sussex heatwave ‘melts’ A272 road surface

As people in Sussex bask in soaring temperatures the heatwave appears to be taking a toll on the A272.

An eyewitness has reported the A272 between Haywards Heath and Scaynes Hill is ‘melting’ after Sussex was hit by temperatures above 30 degrees Celcius. Traffic in the area appears to be coping well despite the incident. A West Sussex County Council spokesperson said: “The exceptionally hot weather caused a section of the A272 between Scaynes Hill and Haywards Heath to melt. We took immediate action and our contractor spread sand over the affected area. The melting is where the bitumen softens and aggregate is pushed into the bitumen. This is not unheard of and we do get some incidences of this with sustained, exceptionally hot weather. Meanwhile, forecasters say temperatures look set to drop soon.”
