Poor weather combined with over-running engineering works at Gatwick left commuters and holiday makers without a direct rail link between Gatwick and Victoria.

Planned improvement works at Gatwick and Purley were completed in time for the surge back to work today (Thursday, January 2) but some commuters buying new season tickets faced paying more than £4,000.

An annual season ticket from Haywards Heath to all London terminals now costs £4,032.00 compared to £3,916.00 in 2013.

Commuters travelling to London via Horsham face ticket rises and continuing disruption to services caused by the extremely wet weather over the Christmas period and New Year’s Eve.

The line is closed between Horsham and Dorking with a replacement bus service in place because of a large landslip at Ockley.

Network Rail says the site of the landslip is difficult to access and it will take engineers at least a week to repair the damage.
