The surface of the A272 between Scaynes Hill and Haywards Heath has appeared to ‘melt’, an eyewitness told this newspaper.

A West Sussex County Council spokesperson said: “The exceptionally hot weather caused a section of the A272 between Scaynes Hill and Haywards Heath to melt.

“We took immediate action and our contractor spread sand over the affected area.

“The melting is where the bitumen softens and aggregate is pushed into the bitumen. This is not unheard of and we do get some incidences of this with sustained, exceptionally hot weather.

“Meanwhile, forecasters say temperatures look set to drop soon.”
