TV's Hermione Cockburn supports plastic bag free Cuckfield campaign

VILLAGERS in Cuckfield have launched a new campaign to become a plastic bag free community.

The project is the idea of Cuckfield Local, part of the Transition Initiative.

The group is offering shoppers a specially commissioned stylish Cuckfield fairtrade organic cotton carrier in an attempt to cut down the 13 billion plastic bags issued every year in the UK – an average of 300 per adult per year.

The launch at the Cuckfield Local produce market at the Talbot Inn courtyard on Saturday was supported by Hermione Cockburn, a presenter on TV's Coast who grew up in Cuckfield.

Hermione said: "I whole-heartedly encourage everyone to support it. As well as making a statement on caring for the environment, I think it's a wonderful example of what people can do when there is a will to take action to make things better.

"And the new bag is also really stylish – I can't wait to get mine!"
