UGLY show is given debut

THEATRE Akimbo present the result of their latest project when teenakimbo perform their very first production UGLY, at The Dome in Worthing, on Wednesday, December 1.

The company launched the new project for 12 to 16-year-olds in September, setting up teenakimbo to devise their own performance piece focusing on the themes surrounding the company’s 2009 Arundel Festival triumph The Ugly One, by Marius von Mayenburg.

The project is part-funded by Worthing Arts Council.

Glenda Harkess, Theatre Akimbo’s artistic director, said: “The group of eight young actors have tackled questions around their own looks, images and personalities, and have devised their own, very personal, play around these themes, scripting their own work and using movement to bring together a very powerful piece of performance.

“UGLY has been a fantastic project, working with this age group and seeing how they tackle issues that impact on their day to day lives is really rewarding.

“Together they have formed teenakimbo and have not only managed to get out of bed on a Saturday morning, but have worked really hard together to achieve something that is meaningful, honest and entertaining.

“This is only the beginning and I hope that they will be part of teenakimbo’s strong future.”

teenakimbo will be performing their piece for one night only at The Dome in Worthing on Wednesday, December 1 at 7.30pm.
