UPDATE: Man charged after Fittleworth shooting

A man has been charged after a shooting in Fittleworth on Saturday (October 31).

Police were called to an address in Fairmead Close at around 6.40pm after reports of an argument between two men.

Officers said a 61-year-old man from the village was treated by paramedics at the scene for a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Brian Acott, 70, from Fairmead Close, Fittleworth, was arrested and subsequently charged with wounding with intent, possessing a firearm when prohibited for life and possessing a prohibited weapon. He has been remanded in custody to appear before Crawley magistrates on Monday (November 2).

Detective Inspector Rob Walker said: “This shooting will no doubt have come as a shock to the local community, but I would like to reassure residents that incidents like this are extremely rare in the area.

“Anyone who saw what happened is asked to email [email protected] or call 101 quoting Operation Milestone.”
