Six crews from across West Sussex were called to tackle the fire in Sparks Lane, Cuckfield, yesterday (Sunday February 14).

A spokesman for the fire service said the blaze broke out at around 2pm in a 30m by 15m home, damaging both the ground floor and first floor before spreading to the roof.

A gas main also caught alight and engineers from SGN Gas Networks were called to help isolate the gas supply.

A spokesman for SGN, which is responsible for gas networks in the south, said: “We were called out to a property in Spark’s Lane, Cuckfield, as a fire had damaged the property’s gas service pipe.

“We attended quickly, in our capacity as the local provider of the gas emergency service.

“Our engineers worked alongside the fire service to isolate the gas supply to the property.

“The gas supply was isolated at approximately 6.20pm.”

The fire was extinguished by 7.15pm.

Crews used three hose reels, two water jets and ten breathing apparatus to fight the flames.

The fire service spokesman said ten per cent of both the ground floor and first floor were damaged by heat.

30 per cent of the ground floor was damaged by smoke while the smoke also damaged 50 per cent of the first floor.

No-one was in the building at the time of the fire and no injuries have been reported, the spokesman added.
