Update: Southern offers bus replacement service after train derails near Brighton station

A spokesman for Southern Rail said: “Due to an empty train derailing between the depot and Brighton station train services are currently at a standstill in the Brighton area.

“Although severely disrupted we are now able to operate train services between Brighton and Lewes, and between Brighton and Worthing and north of Preston Park only.

“Power to the lines in the Brighton area has been switched off while staff attempt to move the train.”

“Disruption is expected to continue until the end of service.”

Southern ticket holders are being accepted on: Thameslink mainline train services which are also severely disrupted, South West Trains services between Portsmouth, Southampton and London Waterloo, First Great Western train services between Redhill and Guildford and Southeastern train services between Hastings and London via Tonbridge.

Rail tickets are being accepted by: Brighton and Hove buses between Brighton and Shoreham (Route 2), between Brighton and Lewes (Route 29), between Brighton and Eastbourne via Newhaven (Route 12) and byStagecoach buses between Brighton and Littlehampton / Bognor / Portsmouth Hard (Route 700).

Southern said it is looking to operate replacement buses. Once available, buses will operate between Brighton and Worthing, between Brighton and Lewes and between Brighton and Haywards Heath.
