A water leak has been in part responsible for washing away the foundations from underneath the pavement as well as a small section of the ground under the west-bound A272 through the town.

Martin Davis, distribution manager at South East Water said: “We have located and repaired the leak and our contractors are now on site carrying out reinstatement work.

“For the safety of the public and our contractors while we carry out this work, we have installed two-way lights.

“We know this is a very busy section of road and we are working as quickly as possible to keep disruption to a minimum.

“At this stage it is not possible to say how long the lights will be there.

“We would ask that motorists bear with us and are patient while we deal with this unexpected incident.”
