A primary school student sang Christmas songs to Dame Vera Lynn, which she enjoyed so much she started singing along.
Great Walstead School pupil Christopher Gilling-Ulph sang to the ‘forces sweetheart’.
He said: “I really enjoyed the experience, especially when she started to sing along while I was singing.
“I also recited my poem, Talking Turkeys by Benjamin Zephaniah, which helped me win the poetry competition at school, and she laughed.”
The school stated it is very proud of Christopher, and said and ‘everyone was very moved by his singing’.
“I enjoyed cheering her up, like she used to do for the soldiers in the Second World War,” Christopher added.
After the service Dame Vera Lynn’s daughter invited him to have tea with her mother.
Christopher, who is in Year 6 at Great Walstead, has been performing from a young age. He has won awards for his singing, most recently in the Mid Sussex Music Festival. He sings in the school choirs and also is a budding actor.
For his audience with Dame Vera, he sang Walking in the Air from The Snowman, Pie Jesu by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Consider Yourself by Lionel Bart.
