The site near Horley, nicknamed the Gatwick Gusher, is thought to contain up to 100bn barrels of oil.

UK Oil and Gas Investments has said it does not expect to have to use hydraulic fracturing or ‘fracking’ to release the oil.

However, anti-fracking campaign groups fear that large deposits of shale gas could be found, creating a huge incentive for fracking to take place.
