Rescue dog Chester, a six-year-old Newfoundland, was crowned ‘Best in Show’ at The Great British Bark Off, run by The Mewes Vets, on Saturday September 5.
Chester received ‘Most Fabulous Dog’ and also went on to sweep up the overall prize at the Ultimate Dog Show, part of Haywards Heath Town Day.
Judge and owner of The Mewes Vets, Julia Mewes said: “I was blown away by his gentleness and truly fabulous nature. It was really hard to pick an overall winner, but Chester showed star quality.
“When he first arrived in the ring he was led in by a toddler, smaller than himself, and he carried it off with style!”
Other winners included West Highland White terrier, Harry, who took ‘Most Obedient Dog’ for his crisp, brisk response to his owner’s commands.
Tiny Jack Russell cross terrier, 7 year old Jess, was a double first prize winner, having the ‘Waggiest Tail’ and then demonstrating her ability in ‘Best Catcher’ – easily snaffling sausages, even when thrown off to one side!
Julia continued: “It was a wonderful afternoon. I loved meeting so many beloved pets, and it was especially great to be given the Main Arena to judge Best in Show by the Town Council to showcase how special the bond is between a pet owner and their canine companion. We drew quite a crowd!”
“I would like to thank my wonderful team at The Mewes Vets for giving up their Saturday afternoon to make this event run so smoothly, and all the dog owners and other supporters, who joined in and hopefully enjoyed the Show as much as we did.”
