Two students from Warden Park Academy are enjoying considerable success in judo.
William Burke, Year 8, has been selected to the pre-cadet England Judo squad following results at national competitions.
This follows on from a very busy 2014, involving trips to Belgium, Sweden and all parts of the UK.
Last week saw William in action at the British Schools Judo Championship at the Ice Sheffield, along with fellow Year 8 student Thea Griffey, both representing Warden Park School on this occasion. William came away with Gold. Thea, unfortunately carrying a back injury, just missed out on the medals in a very tough group.
Both William and Thea are current Sussex champions at their respective weights, and have both represented Sussex in inter-county competition. Both children train 2-3 times a week at their club - Kin Ryu based at K2 in Crawley.
They also attend regular Sussex squad training sessions and travel to Camberley Judo club for extra training. William will now attend regular England training camps at Walsall University Centre of Excellence for Judo, with the opportunity to represent England abroad later in the year.
William and Thea are both competing in the near future in the Sussex Championship in April, followed by a trip to Belfast to compete in the Northern Ireland Open.
